The best analysis on Obama’s trip to Asia comes from James Fallows of the Atlantic Monthly web site. He’s a true China-phile. Very clear-eyed in his views. He’s on a bit of a rampage about the superficial and, frankly, wrong-headed coverage of Obama’s trip by the American media.
It is truly galling what American media has come to. Everything is a zero-sum game. Big win or big loss. Since the Chinese leaders did not submit themselves to Obama’s charm, his trip is declared a failure. I also suspect that this coverage is informed by the media’s fear that they be perceived has having been co-opted by Obama’s charm. So, they overcompensate on the negative side. Obama, typically, focuses on the long view. The question is whether America is mature or patient enough to let Obama’s approach play out.
