Peace at Hand in the Middle East?

No, not between Israel and the Palestinians.  Rather, among the Palestinians.  In the Washington Note, blogger Steve Clemons has “breaking news” that a meeting, brokered by the Egyptians between Hamas and Fatah is about to occur.  He reports:

Although Hamas called today for a “delay” in the Cairo meeting and deal signing ceremony, I have learned through a credible source that Hamas leader Khaled Mashal will inform the Egyptians tomorrow that he is ready to go to Cairo.

The significance of this development is the possibility that Israel could, in principle, have a negotiating partner who represents all the Palestinians.  Of course, that presupposes that Prime Minister Netanyahu has any interest in negotiating, a big if.
