Big U.S. China Meeting in Washington

There was a very significant meeting between the U.S. and China occurred today.  It paralyzed the city because streets around the Ronald Reagan Building, where the meeting took place, were closed.

It was a joint meeting of the Departments of Treasury and State and their counterparts from China.  The Obama Administration is seeking to open up dialogue with China by integrating the vast numbers of bilateral issues confronting the two super-powers.  Among the issues are security, climate change, the economic crisis, trade, etc., etc.

Obama set the tone, not only of the meeting, but also of the future on Sino-American relations.

He said:

Some in China think that America will try to contain China’s ambitions; some in America think that there is something to fear in a rising China. I take a different view.

It is clear that relations with China have reached a tipping point.  Leaders in the U.S. know that bashing China is no longer a free shot.  We are too interdependent for demagoguery.   Makes for a very complex relationship.

Read about the meeting in the Financial Times.
